What is Palliative Care?

Palliative care focuses on relieving or controlling pain and other discomforts. A team of medical professionals that include doctors, nurses, therapists and other support workers create a plan of treatment to address your specific needs.

The Benefits of Palliative Care for Pain Management

Palliative care is adaptable to many illnesses and diseases. The benefits of the approach are numerous and include the following: -Pain control. -Palliative care soothes your anxieties, and provides comfort in the face of physical and - emotional distress. -It controls and improves symptoms such as nausea, fatigue, depression and breathing difficulties that are associated with chronic illnesses and disease. -Palliative care can be used at any stage of an illness or disease. -It improves the quality of life for the patient and the patient’s family. -The care can be carried out in many settings. These include nursing homes, assisted living facilities, hospitals or in the comfort of your own home.

Examples of the Use of Palliative Care

Palliative care has been successful in: – Alleviating the painful and distressing side effects caused by radiation treatments and chemotherapy. – Relieving the pain, discomfort and stress that attend conditions such as chronic heart disease, neurological conditions and lung diseases. – Easing the suffering caused by chronic renal disease and a host of other chronic conditions. Our Medical Director, Dr. Bort, is board-certified in palliative care. Under her directorship, Heartwood Home Health and Hospice is well-placed to offer palliative care for the relief of pain, and also as a means of pain management.
